Teaching Tower Classes: How to Effectively Create and Teach:
2 PMA CECs
5pm-7pm Friday, April 28th $125

To sincerely take care of your clients, Apparatus Classes are a big part of our growing Pilates world. You teach them, but you were never trained for it. In your tower classes, there are people of al levels, many who have never seen or been on the tower in your class and some who are pretty advanced, as well. How do you create a class that takes care of them all? Let's take the time to learn how to create really safe, strong and challenging classes on the tower. There are special guidelines and progressions you can follow and great ways to make a fantastic class for everyone...including you as the teacher!

Prepare yourself to be take a Tower Class while you are working through the lecture. We'll physically work in shifts! A very dynamic 2 hours! (Of course, if you don't wish to move and prefer not....that is perfectly great!)

SATURDAY:

Large Group Workout Session:
9am-10am Saturday, April 28th $40

Back Problems: From Tip to Tail
3 PMA CECs
10:30am-1:30pm Saturday, April 28th $175

With 24 moving vertebrae, discs, muscles, ligaments tendons and nerves...there are bound to be problems from time to time.  Some severe, some minor, but all painful and annoying.  In this workshop, we'll work to understand the most common conditions of the back including herniated discs, L5-S1 issues, SI trouble, scoliosis and weak necks and how to address them with Pilates.  Bring your questions and basic understanding of the anatomy of the spine and pelvis and an open mind!

Biomechanics and Functional Anatomy: How Our Bodies Work and How to Cue That Reality
3 PMA CECs
3pm -6pm Saturday, April 28th $175

While your physical intuition is an important asset in teaching Pilates, intuition is not enough. To sincerely take care of your clients, you must know the truth of how the body works.  Cue the reality, not the myths or mistakes. Being a confident teacher depends on it…demands it.  We’ll work to understand the best theories on biomechanics:  Biotensegrity and Biodynamics.  Then apply this information to your teaching and the affects on the entire body focused first on the pelvis and spine.  Knowing and understanding is the only way.

We hope you'll be able to join us for this excited weekend of learning and inspiration!

We do have limited space for the workshops so please sign up soon to hold your spot. We are offering $75 off if you sign up for all 3 workshops and $50 off if you sign up for 2 on Saturday. Please reach out for the discount codes for these offers and I can email them back to you. If you are also needing to break up your payments, I'm happy to help you with that too. I'm allowing 50% down and payment in full 30 Days prior to the Workshops.

The workshops I'll be presenting:

Friday 9a-5p:
Rotated and Twisted Pelvises: It's Simpler Than You Think!
6 PMA CECs

Whether it’s from scoliosis or just life, most people have a rotation of the pelvis. That rotation leads to compensatory imbalances. Strong here, weak there…it’s no joke. However, it’s far easier to manage and rebalance than most people think. The world has told you it’s complicated, I am here to tell you it’s not complicated at all. Let me teach you what you need to do and why. Though there is some apparatus work, this is appropriate for all instructors.

Saturday 9a-12n:
Anatomy Exercises: Spinal Articulation Progressions
3 PMA CECs

At least half of Pilates exercises have some sort of spinal articulation. Sometimes it works well and other times it fails. Your intuition has helped you along, but the real biomechanics and functional anatomy will give you a true education. We'll go through each exercise that requires spinal articulation to understand the progression.
-Learn which muscles actually make the spine articulate and spinal articulation exercises work.
-Learn to recognize why an exercise doesn't work.
-Walk away with the ability to apply this knowledge to Pilates exercises: a true understanding and ability to help your client (and yourself) strengthen and stretch so that Spinal Articulation is easier to accomplish earlier in your Pilates life.
Appropriate for comprehensively trained instructors.

I hope to see you there!

Ohhhh I love Pilates on Tour Chicago! (I love them all, to tell you the truth!)
Here is all of the information and registration: https://www.pilates.com/BBAPP/V/education/pilates-on-tour/2018-chicago.html

I will be presenting:

Friday (October 12) 9a-5p:
Biomechanics and Functional Anatomy: How our Bodies Work and How to Cue that Reality
6 PMA CECs

While your physical intuition is an important asset in teaching Pilates, intuition is not enough. To sincerely take care of your clients, you must know the truth of how the body works. Cue the reality, not the myths or mistakes. Being a confident teacher depends on it…demands it. We’ll work to understand the best theories on biomechanics: Biotensegrity and Biodynamics. Then apply this information to your teaching and the effects on the entire body focused first on the pelvis and spine. Knowing and understanding is the only way.
Appropriate for comprehensively trained instructors.

Saturday PM (October 13) 2p-5p:
Knees: All you need to Know and Little Bit More
3 PMA CECs

No matter what the alignment (bowed, knock, normal, hyper-extended), no matter what the imbalance or trauma (ACL tears, MCL tears, meniscal tears, ITB syndrome) we’ve all got knees and need to know how to care for them. In this workshop we’ll take time to understand the physiology and functional anatomy of the knee complex as well as the changing dynamics from the alignment issues, imbalances and traumas that commonly exist. We’ll apply that knowledge to caring for knees in Pilates. Knees ought to be an easy part of the body for our clients: running, skiing, climbing stairs or just sitting, standing and walking...we must understand knees.
Appropriate for comprehensively trained instructors.

Sunday AM (October 14) 9a-12n:
Anatomy Exercises: Leg Strength/Hip Flexor Progressions
3 PMA CECs

Hip Flexors, Quadriceps, Hamstrings, Adductors/Inner Thighs all need to be strong and supple. But what is "get out of your hip flexors" and why do hip flexors cramp? Should knees really be "soft"? What is a locked joint? What do we really need to teach and do? It's time for an education of biomechanics and functional anatomy...applied to Pilates exercises. We'll go through each exercise related to leg and hip flexor strength to understand the progression.
-Learn which muscles need to be strengthened and which need to be stretched for exercises with leg action or support to work.
-See how to recognize what is weak when an exercise "fails"
-Walk away with the ability to apply this knowledge to Pilates exercises: a true understanding and ability to help your client (and yourself) strengthen and stretch so that Hip Flexion and Leg strength/stretch are easier to accomplish earlier in your Pilates life.
Appropriate for experienced instructors.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction WEBINAR

$150
3 PMA CECs

You can join in on the Live-Stream or work with the Recording
Please note that the timing 11am-2pm is Eastern Time (NYC Time). Adjust to your time zone.

Pilates teachers ask me more about the Sacroiliac joint and its dysfunction than any other joint in the body. Whereas most of our clients struggle with their lumbar spine, a hip, a knee, it’s Pilates teachers who struggle most with their SI joints. Whether you or your client has SI joint dysfunction, it can be quite frustrating to manage. That is, until you learn what goes on at this joint, what can alter its balance and how to return it to balance...not just for the moment, but for the long-term. That is what we will discover in this workshop. Whether you teach on the mat, some or all apparatus, this workshop is for you! -Shari Berkowitz

All styles of Pilates are welcome!

Registration: Email Shari at info@TheVerticalWorkshop.com Please specify if you'd like to be part of the Live-Stream or work with the Recording.

Injuries, Ailments, Imbalances: Working Around the Big Stuff in Sessions and Group Classes with Shari Berkowitz

Location: Your Computer as live-stream or as a recording. If you are near Peekskill, NY, you are welcome to join me at my home studio. Please ask for that specifically. Attendance for my studio is limited.

Timing: Each day is 11am - 7pm Eastern Time (NYC Time).
Often, our European participants do the first half of each day as a live-stream, then view the recording of the second half the very next morning so that you do not have to go on into the wee hours.

18 PMA CECs
$900
It’s the rare client who has no aches or pains. Whether in a private session or a group class, we must know how to work around all that our clients bring to the hour. Each hour you teach is a remarkable improvisational performance. However, any great improviser must know the guidelines or chaos ensues. In this workshop, we’ll delve into those very guidelines for issues of the spine, pelvis, spine (including neck), knees, ankles, feet, shoulder girdle, elbows, wrists and hands. We’ll take time on hyper-extension of the knees and elbows. We’ll also take careful consideration with osteoporosis, elderly clients, obese clients, pregnant and postpartum clients.

For each area, ailment or special case, we will work through the biomechanical implications working to understand how one compensates and how we seek to rework the biotensegrity. Additionally with special cases, we will endeavor to understand the biochemistry that affects the clients ability in the session. We must know what to watch out for to make wise choices of what to do and what not to do.

Apply these tools, knowledge and actions to Pilates Teaching...no matter what style you teach.

You deserve the best tools possible!  Please let me share them with you!

If you can't or don’t want to do the entire Intensives…come to one or some.  Join in on “Injuries, Ailments…” - If you want to come one day at a time, it's $310/day. And, you'll get 6 PMA CECs/day.

Tuition Information with Projects...

The 3-day seminar is $900.

As this is an a la carte seminar, though part of the full The Vertical Workshop Pilates Intensives, if you find that you would like to do the 4 months of interactive homework projects that go with this seminar, it would be my pleasure to offer that to you. Often times, people do this. And it was created to deepen the study of the information we work on in the seminar and integrate it into your teaching and self-practice. The homework projects are a combination of work you do while teaching, during your own workouts and then additional articles to read, research, videos to watch and such that serve to turn an a la carte workshop into an apprenticed education. We work interactively on line with discussions all through the week, yet it is designed to work around your teaching and home life...as we all have busy lives.

With that, the seminar plus the homework projects is $1700.

Injuries, Ailments, Imbalances: Working Around the Big Stuff in Sessions and Group Classes with Shari Berkowitz
Timing and Location: bePilates - Marylebone, London

(Friday and Saturday: 11a-6p

Sunday: 10a-5p

18 PMA CECs
£750

Join in on “Injuries, Ailments…” - If you want to come one day at a time, it's £270/day. And, you'll get 6 PMA CECs/day.

Tuition Information with Projects...

The 3-day seminar is £750.

With that, the seminar plus the homework projects is £1250.

Payment:
Cash in person, credit card, wire transfer

Live-Streaming Webinar

Live-Streaming Webinar on Biomechanics, Biotensegrity and Biodynamics of the human body as a functional whole with applications to Pilates.

Please join for just the seminar/webinar or learn all about the full program.
This is the first full live-streaming webinar version of The Vertical Workshop Pilates Teacher Intensives (TVW PTI). The full program is each webinar + 4 months of interactive projects that we do between webinars to fully integrate this information into the way you think, move and teach. Please read the information packet in the section "Teacher Intensives" on this site.

Now...about this webinar...

FULL BODY INTEGRATION...

Yes, this is seminar is open to all teachers of all styles.  It is also the first seminar of the The Vertical Workshop Pilates Teacher Intensives (TVW PTI)...but, again open to all teachers even if you're not in the entire TVW PTI program.  Please join in for a wonderful webinar!  There are lovely people who are joining already!

18 PMA CECs

You've had a lot of continuing education, but none of it...none of it is comprehensive.  I mean...you get a lot of information, but it's all bits and pieces.  Are you able to apply it all?  Really?  While the entire Pilates Teacher Intensives is to rectify this missing an essential element in Pilates continuing education, this first 3-day seminar "Full Body Integration" must be the basis for all that we do.  What is your perspective on the human body?  How much does it align with how the human body really works?  How do you tie it all together with a true education and apply it to your actual teaching of Pilates?  How do you take your education and make it all make sense?

In "Full Body Integration" you will learn the modern biomechanics:  Biodynamics and Biotensegrity.  Biodynamics is my theory of human physical movement and dysfunction.  I am a biomechanics scientist and theorist in addition to being a Pilates teacher.  I spend the majority of my time, in fact, developing ways for people to really understand how the body works at it's best and help people return to their most able states why dysfunction occurs.  Pilates is an exceptional method to return a body to health...but only if we understand how the body works and make sure what we're doing in Pilates coordinates with that.

We will explore and study:

Biodynamics (by Shari Berkowitz) and Biotensegrity (by Dr. Stephen Levin)
Functional Anatomy of The Human Body with specific detail on:

The Spine
The Pelvis
The Shoulder Girdle and The Arms
The Legs
and...

we tie it all together...because we're not just bits and pieces...we are organisms.

Apply this knowledge and actions to Pilates Teaching...no matter what style you teach.

Your perspective is everything.  Please let me guide your education and understanding with "Full Body Integration".

Seminar/Webinar Only: $900
Projects: $800

The Shoulder Girdle: A Delicate Balance
3PMA CECs
3-6pm

The Shoulder Girdle is a complex system. When I first started teaching, all I knew was "pull your wings down" and "crack a walnut". The more I study biomechanics, the more I know there's very little down and no cracking. It's a delicate balance of bone, muscles, ligaments, tendons...and constant reassessing. Dynamic Stability is what we're looking for.

Let's spend time studying where we're going with the shoulder girdle and how to get there in Pilates. We'll take time with anatomy and biomechanics, Pilates exercises, common ailments and your questions. Take a moment to review what you already know before the workshop...then we can grow from there.

Thoracolumbar Fascia: The Second Brain of Movement with Shari Berkowitz

You've heard much about Fascia and perhaps have touched on the Thoracolumbar Fascia. Through my years of research and applying research to movement, the thoracolumbar fascia proves itself to be what I have coined "The Second Brain of Movement". In the effort of developing efficient balance of the human musculoskeletal system, accessing the thoracolumbar fascia is the key to unlocking the doors of dysfunction and returning balance to the entire system, not just the musculoskeletal system, but to the entire body. There is nothing simplistic about it but the techniques are simple and easy with the correct understanding and practice. You already have all of the exercises to use, now it's time to learn how to apply them. This is the missing link in nearly all modalities. In this workshop you will learn how to understand the thoracolumbar fascia and apply it to your current Pilates work so you can be 100% effective every time.

FRIDAY, July 24 - ALL DAY:
ROTATED AND TWISTED PELVISES 6 HOURS - 6 PMA CECs
Whether it’s from scoliosis or just life, most people have a rotation of the pelvis. That rotation leads to compensatory imbalances. Strong here, weak there…it’s no joke. However, it’s far easier to manage and rebalance than most people think. The world has told you it’s complicated, I am here to tell you it’s not complicated at all. Thoracolumbar Fascia: The Second Brain of Movement

*ONLY 5 SPOTS LEFT.*

SUNDAY, July 26 AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS 3 HOURS - 3 PMA CECs
The Inversion and Upside Down Exercises - Shari Berkowitz
From the Jackknife to the Candlestick Walkover, any exercise where the pelvis is lifted is a solid challenge. Why is it easy for some and hard for others? How do we progress a client to be able to one day flip over the bars on the Trapeze Table? What does it really take? Do I have to practice handstands all the time? They why aren’t handstands part of the method as a whole? Lets discover what it take and work on the progressions to get there. It’s time that you and your clients get the benefit of Inversions and Upside Down Exericses! Appropriate for Apparatus instructors.

Reformer on the Mat
3 PMA CECs
$140
Each part of the reformer helps each exercise be a tool or a challenge within Pilates.  What if we take the tools away and just do the reformer workout on the mat with the lessons we’ve learned from that piece of equipment?  There is a technique to teaching it with appropriate images and through- line.  Some exercises translate perfectly well and some are re-worked for the mat.  Learn the technique behind it all!  You’ll wow yourself and your clients!

4-6
Beyond Theory
2 PMA CECs
$90
Daily teaching is utterly different than the theory of apprentice programs…and ought to be.  Your program was a place to learn technique and guidelines. In real life, though, many questions come up:  How do I command my class, deal with difficult clients, advance my clients, fight off boredom, get my clients into their lower abdominals or out of their hip flexors, teach clients who have learned a different style, teach clients with many health conditions, manage client/teacher relationships, get an exercise to work that isn’t…and so many more. This workshop will give you tools, resources and answer your specific questions.

Sunday, July 26

9-9:45
Archival Mat - Thematic Mat Class

10-1
Knees: All You Need to Know and A Little Bit More
3 PMA CECs
$140

3-Day Seminar on Biomechanics, Biotensegrity and Biodynamics of the human body as a functional whole with applications to Pilates.

FULL BODY INTEGRATION...

(Yes, this is seminar is open to all teachers of all styles.  It is also the first day of the Teacher Intensives...but, again open to all teachers even if you're not in the Teacher Intensives program.  Please join in for a wonderful weekend!  There are lovely people who are joining already!)

18 PMA CECs
£750 Seminar Only
1-8pm Each Day

The Spine
The Pelvis
The Shoulder Girdle
The Legs
and...
we tie it all together...because we're not just bits and pieces...we are organisms.Apply this  knowledge and actions to Pilates Teaching...no matter what style you teach.

Your perspective is everything.  Please let me guide your education and understanding with "Full Body Integration".

Not ready to commit to 3 days? Come to Day #1 or Day #3 (Friday or Sunday). Perhaps if you come to Day #1, you'll find yourself intrigued to stay for more. This is immediately useful information. Critical Thinking + Hands-On.

In this workshop, we work on the true keys to Pilates success which is less about what exercises you give, but more about how you teach. The layering of “Intrinsic Actions” is what Pilates is about. Intrinsic actions are the internal actions that we want our clients to be able to incorporate into their full lives and any movement they do. We use Pilates exercises to practice these intrinsic actions. However … how we teach these actions is vital. Are you layering your cues? Are you teaching the appropriate actions correctly in the most effective order … teaching thematically rather than overwhelming your client or yourself. It’s time to delve into the actions of Pilates. Again … not the exercise … the intrinsic actions of the abdominals, back muscles, diaphragm, deep gluteals, adductors and shoulder girdle. It’s a thrill to find yourself at ease with thematic teaching, the Key to Pilates Success.
